HERITAGE FROM 1967

From one strand
of the 9,800-year lineage of the Way

A LETTER FROM Jinyeong (眞永) Jang KO

On the First Breath

On the First Breath

Standing upon the Current of the Way

2026 CEYear 9,774 of the Cheonwon Calendar

To all practitioners and teachers

This is Jang KO.

Before this great turning point in human civilization, the Kouksundo Bakdol-beop Bonwon, in the embrace of sixty years since its revival, raises the banner of SOOM Civilization — the world of breath — and sets sail. At such a moment, I wish to offer a few words, with reverence and a solemn heart, to everyone who studies Kouksundo breathing.

To all fellow practitioners, companions on the Way, and teachers around the world, who for so many years have cultivated and kept the authentic practice of the Way, each in your own place —

What, truly, is the essence we long for and must demonstrate before humanity?

For a long time, day and night — in the mountains of The Soom Campus on Jirisan and on the bright ground of Tamna, Jeju — I have held this question deep within me and wrestled with it.

I believe the shared aspiration we hold is clear.

  1. 01First, to set down the core essence of the 9,800-year Eastern practice of the Way in a complete and systematic modern language, opening an evidence-based path on which anyone can practice rightly and grow, without the slightest falsehood.
  2. 02Second, for this great heritage not to remain a museum relic or a treasure preserved in history, but to evolve into a living governance for the future, moving within the lives of people in the age of artificial intelligence.
  3. 03Third, to raise the dignity of this practice to the highest standard of humanity, so that it goes beyond individual cultivation and is elevated into an absolute public value that heals the crises of humanity and society.

I am certain that this is the original heart we all share deep within, across the ages.

Yet what has been the actual course we have walked? Over the long flow of time, many streams branched out beneath a single lineage of the Way, and much time has passed, each with its own devotion and direction.

I believe this too is undeniable history, and the fruit of noble efforts by those who did their best to protect the Way (道) in their own places. I sincerely understand and deeply respect the care and devotion of every teacher held within those years.

Now the world has reached a momentous point at which the operating system (OS) of civilization must change.

Drawing on the experience and wisdom of those long years, we have come to a time when we must attune the future of humanity together, with a wider and larger view.

I am by no means here to evaluate or judge the existing order. Still less do I intend to artificially gather or absorb you under the name or interests of any particular organization.

I simply wish to quietly declare a principle of great nature: though the great river of the 9,800-year grand design may now flow scattered into many branches according to the terrain, when the time is ripe, by the eternal law (永法) of the great universe, it will meet again in one vast sea and resonate as one.

A path on which the living strength of the practice is fully proven; a path that takes firm root in the real world and extends as a standard for future humanity; and a path on which this value is elevated into a public asset for saving and reviving all living beings (救活蒼生) — this is the path I wish to walk with you.

I know well that the small vessel I hold cannot contain this vast sea of civilization. Yet because someone must first take up even a small vessel and steadfastly reach out a hand, I offer this letter with nothing but a public heart (公心).

I bow my head in deep gratitude for the effort and devotion with which each of you has kept the Way, often alone, in your own place.

I quietly hope that one day, when the time comes, a solemn day will arrive when we can gather in one place, speak of humanity's future direction, share what each of us has realized through practice, and laugh and walk together. I believe that this synchronizing of hearts alone will be the great first breath that opens the next civilization.

I hope this sincere heart reaches each of my fellow practitioners, companions on the Way, and teachers around the world, warmly and clearly.

With palms joined, Jinyeong (眞永) Jang KO

WHY HERITAGE

The Roots of SOOM Civilization

SOOM Civilization is not an idea that appeared suddenly one day.

It was born from the current of the 9,800-year lineage of the Way, the practice tradition of Kouksundo Bakdol-beop, and the devotion and embodied realization of countless practitioners and teachers. We do not speak of heritage only to preserve the past.

We speak of heritage to bring its value to life today and pass it on to future generations.

Just as a tree grows tall only when its roots are deep, SOOM Civilization moves toward a new civilization from a deep tradition. A bridge between past and future — that is what SOOM Civilization means by heritage.

LINEAGE

The Lineage of the Way ─ Where We Come From

The current of the 9,800-year lineage of the Way has not been carried by one person's name alone.

The lineage, as it has been handed down, traces its origin to Cheongi Doin (天氣道人). After him, it is a history of life kept, transmitted and carried across the ages by countless nameless practitioners of the Way through one-to-one transmission. Over the long flow of time, the names of many of them have been lost, yet their teachings and the thread of the lineage have passed from teacher to disciple and been preserved to this day. In this way, the lineage of the Way has continued unbroken until now.

In particular, Grandmaster Cheongsan carried the lineage into the modern era, reorganizing the practice so that it could be passed on to people today and sharing it widely, leading the revival of Kouksundo Bakdol-beop. SOOM Civilization seeks to preserve and honor the roots of this lineage deeply, and to express its value in today's language and systems, carrying it forward into a future civilization. To keep the roots deep, to let the trunk reach toward the times, and to share the fruit with humanity — this is the intention of SOOM Civilization.

The Current of 9,774 Years of the Cheonwon Calendar

SOOM Civilization is not an idea that began suddenly one day.

It stands upon the current of a lineage of the Way that has continued for ages within the practice traditions of the East, exploring the principles of heaven and humanity, of life and nature. The lineage, as handed down, began with Cheongi Doin (天氣道人), continued through the Hongik spirit of Hwanin (桓因), Hwanung (桓雄) and Dangun (檀君), and lived on for ages within the spiritual and practice culture of the Korean people. That current flowed into the tradition of Kukseon (國亻天), and has been carried on under the names Seondo (亻天道), Pungnyudo (風流道), and Kouksundo (國亻天道). And in modern times, through Grandmaster Cheongsan and the transmission of Kouksundo Bakdol-beop, it has once again been put in order and carried forward.

The lineage of the Way is not a story of the past. It is a history of ceaseless inquiry — to understand life, to understand the human being, and to live in harmony with the universe.

SOOM Civilization stands upon that long current of the lineage of the Way.

FROM LINEAGE TO CIVILIZATION

The Lineage of SOOM Civilization ─ Where It Leads

SOOM Civilization was not born to replace Kouksundo Bakdol-beop. It began in order to extend and connect the wisdom of the 9,800-year lineage of the Way through language and systems that humanity in the 21st century can understand.

If the lineage of the Way is the root, SOOM Civilization is the trunk. Where Kouksundo Bakdol-beop has preserved and transmitted the principles of life, SOOM Civilization extends that value into education and research, science and technology, culture and civilization.

If the lineage of the Way was a path of transmission, SOOM Civilization is a path of sharing. If the lineage was a path of practice, SOOM Civilization is a path that connects practice and daily life, education and society.

SOOM Civilization does not exist to abandon the past. Rather, it exists to open the widest future from the deepest roots. The roots do not change. But the trunk and branches grow with the times. SOOM Civilization is a new trunk reaching toward the next civilization from the roots of the 9,800-year lineage of the Way.
